The number of Azerbaijani soldiers killed in recent border battles between Armenia and Azerbaijan is unclear.
In the early hours of Tuesday, violence broke out between the two bitter rivals, who last clashed in 2020 during a war over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh area.
The violence was blamed on both sides.
According to a statement released by Armenia's defense ministry, at around 00:05am (20:05 GMT) on Tuesday, Azerbaijan began "heavy shelling" of Armenian military positions in the direction of the towns of Goris, Sok, and Jermuk. Azerbaijani forces employed drones, along with "artillery and large-caliber guns," the document said.
The Armenian military, it said, had responded appropriately.
However, Azerbaijan's defense ministry said that its army posts "came under fire, notably from trench mortars," and blamed Armenia for "large-scale subversive operations" in the border regions of Dashkesan, Kelbajar, and Lachin.
