People typically have a more favorable opinion of selfish behavior when they are in a position to benefit from it.
When we observe someone engaging in selfish behavior, it provides us with insight into how that person might behave towards us in the future. For example, if someone buys a friend's lunch without asking her first, we might assume this person is not very thoughtful or considerate. This explanation for why people like selfish people runs counter to common assumptions about how humans should behave. We usually think that we act altruistically because it makes us feel good - because of the good feelings associated with being a nice person - which provides some evidence that people are inherently cooperative creatures by nature...
...we must instead explain altruism as a product of a more fundamental and evolutionary-based psychological law
– not one that has any basis in thinking people are inherently selfish.
... According to evolutionary psychology, people who exhibit self-interested behavior tend to receive more social rewards, including the ability to reproduce. Similarly, since you might be inclined to behave in ways that will achieve reproductive success given your genetic predisposition for selfish behavior (the better the chances of procreating), you will be attracted to people who exhibit this behavior. The result is that people who are genetically predisposed to behave self-interestedly and those who are attracted to them will both attract and be attracted by each other.
... a lot like humans, many animals are also genetically predisposed to behave in self-interested ways and they are often attracted to each other as well.
... once we understand why we like selfishness, we can use this information to get ahead in life by exploiting that attraction from those who are attracted to selfish people.
People who prefer selfish behavior will be attracted by those more naturally inclined to the same behavior. For example, people who have the genetic disposition towards being self-interested may be willing to engage in self-centered activities with someone else and do so willingly because they're able to reap rewards from the other person's natural inclination for selfishness.
