The 30 and 40 piece challenge was started by piano pedagogue Elissa Milne and continues to be one of the best ways to challenge piano students through music, not external rewards. This challenge will help students get through a LOT more music in the year, improving their sight-reading skills, exposing them to more notation formats, exposing them to different styles of music and more.
To make this program effective, you'll need to give your students music that is above their level (challenging), at their level, AND below their level. They will love that they have music that they can "pass" within 1-2 weeks.
No meed to memorize the music. Just learn it and play it accurately and musically. You might also want to set some criteria for what pieces count, especially for your younger piano students. For example, you might stipulate that the piece needs to be 16 measures long.
