A few of you have noticed something disturbing here in my classroom. Every once in a while in our videos, this guy can be seen in the background. And, of course, this isn’t a real human skull. Its a replica. But why do I have it? Well, human skulls were often used by monks in the early church as a memento mori—a reminder of their mortality. They would often only have three things in their room: a Bible, a candle by which to read the Bible, and a skull to remind them that life is short so keep things in perspective. The skull is a reminder to live our lives focused not on creature comforts or storing up earthly treasure, which are fleeting, but on eternity and the presence of God. Heaven is our home, and every day is one day nearer. Morbid? Maybe. But it’s also our reality. And the Bible says we have nothing to fear because for followers of Jesus, “Death is swallowed up in victory.”
