Are there pros and cons to raising the minimum wage? Is raising the minimum wage good or bad? Former Labor Sec. Robert Reich points out the five biggest conservative myths about the minimum wage, and provides the actual truth behind each of these points.
MYTH #1: The current minimum wage ($7.25) is already high enough.
FALSE: If the minimum wage had kept up with inflation it would be more than $10 today. If it kept up with added productivity since then, it would be more than $21 an hour.
MYTH #2: Raising the minimum wage forces companies to lay off workers and slows economic growth.
FALSE: A raise to $15 would boost economic growth by increasing wages of an estimated 17 million Americans.
MYTH #3: Raising the minimum wage is bad for employers.
FALSE: Higher pay brings more people into the pool of potential workers, giving employers more choice in who to hire.
MYTH #4: Most people who make minimum wage are teenagers or part-time workers.
FALSE: Only 10% of minimum wage workers are teenagers, and more than half are adults between the ages of 25-54.
MYTH #5: Raising the minimum wage will generate inflation.
FALSE: Past increases in the minimum wage have not led to significant increases in inflation.
BOTTOM LINE: Raising the minimum wage to $15 would be good for workers, good for the economy, and it would create jobs.
