In less than three months, over 11,000 mumps cases have been reported in Kerala, causing concern for state health authorities. Mumps is primarily caused by the paramyxovirus, affecting the salivary glands and causing swelling and pain in the cheek and jaw areas. Symptoms include fever, followed by swelling and tenderness, lasting 7 to 14 days. While most cases clear up naturally, severe complications like brain swelling or hearing loss can occur. Kerala's frequent reporting of viral diseases is attributed to its forest cover, intense monsoon, and the global dispersal of its population, including medical professionals who may unknowingly spread diseases.
