Metro North Railroad (MNR) in a joint collaboration with the Connecticut Department of Transportation (ConnDOT) has installed 2 bicycle racks in 50 of the new M8 Railcars (that run on the New Haven Line) as part of a pilot program to accommodate those that travel by train with their bicycle.
The Bike Racks were Designed by Sportswork Northwest LLC, and installed on the 50 cars in November at a cost of $66,000. They are located by the doors of the train in the same area that is used for wheelchairs and strollers (as seen in the video). If the test yeilds success, ConnDOT will outfit the whole fleet with these racks.
In my honest opinion, though the bike racks are designed very well, it is extremely hard to locate a car that has the racks especially on a train that is usually 8-10 cars long. To simplify things for the customer, an easily noticeable sign should be placed on the sides of the railcar so that as the train pulls into the station, a bicyclist can identify the car and make his/her way to that car. the bike racks should also be advertised at stations so that the customer knows to look for one of the cars as their train pulls in...
