A South Carolina police officer who shot dead an unarmed black man on Saturday has been charged with murder after a video surfaced showing a very different course of events than his own account.
Walter Scott, a 50-year-old black man, was pulled over by police officer Michael Slager over a broken taillight.
The video shows Slager fire a total of eight shots at Scott as the man tries to run. It runs contrary to Slager’s claim; he said Scott had snatched his taser gun.
After Scott collapsed, Slager is seen to shout at Scott and put handcuffs. Another police officer arrived at the scene moments later. Neither of the men administered first aid. The video shows Slager drop an object near Scott’s body. It is unclear whether it is a taser weapon.
