The Panerai Luminor 1950 3 Days PAM 372 is a beautiful brute. With its classic martial stance, 47mm "1950" case, and high-polish finish, the PAM 372 combines the best elements of Panerai's past and present.
At arm's length, the Luminor 1950 PAM 372 looks the part of mid-century tactical gear. The no-nonsense dial tells the time in bold characters- period. Its case reads like a bank vault and the crown guard looks ready to pull double duty as the business end of an impromptu brass (stainless?) knuckle. A traditional Panerai calf skin strap completes the effect.
For good measure, Panerai graces the simulated-patina "dirty dial" with a halo of authentic Plexiglas as employed in the Italian Navy originals. The unique refractive qualities of the acrylic bubble bend light and distort the features just enough to add endearing vintage character.
But look closer, and refinement assets itself. Consider the 18 karat rose gold hands; they complement the subdued ecru tones of the patina indexes. This is a polished luxury product in every sense; every surface of the bezel and gracefully contoured "1950" case gleams.
Inside the famous Panerai Luminor "cushion" case, a Panerai in-house Caliber P.3000 keeps time better than any of the old war horse movements. With a free-sprung balance, dual-anchored balance bridge, and modern shock protection, the Panerai P.3000 can take knocks that would have put the originals out of action.
As befits a luxury product, unseen refinements abound in the Caliber P.3000. A generous three-day power reserve and independent "time zone" hour hand setting system add utility for the modern watch owner.
Colors, contrast, and reverence for heritage define the Panerai Luminor 1950 3 Days PAM 372. See it in high-resolution images on www.thewatchbox.com Video and content by Tim Mosso.
