School safety requires a community-based approach, and parents and students play a critical role. This panel discussion focuses on the actions parents and students can take to make their schools safer and more supportive. The session provides ideas on how to build a community-wide culture of preparedness and prevention by empowering students to come forward with safety and security concerns, increasing awareness of school safety best practices, and ensuring student and parent voices are integrated into the school safety planning process. Panelists include Janelle W. Hughes, project director for the Readiness and Emergency Management for Schools Technical Assistance Center; Tony Montalto, president of Stand with Parkland; and Kylie, a high school student and youth advisory board member for Sandy Hook Promise.
