The Changing International Order and the Risk of Conflict,
a Conversation with Dr Bruce Jones, vice president and director of the Foreign Policy program at the Brookings Institution
The past decade has seen a dramatic shift in the global balance of economic power, which has begun to shape the balance of political and military power. There is an intensification of geopolitical competition in Asia and Europe, and a return to proxy war in the Middle East.
In this video Dr Bruce Jones joins UNU Senior Policy Adviser Rahul Chandran for a conversation exploring how the international order can withstand these challenges and how the international system might respond. The discussion introduces the global architecture that evolved in the post-cold war era, questions whether it is capable of containing great power conflict, and considers the prospects for international conflict management — including through the UN — to adapt to new geopolitical realities.
About the Speaker
Dr Bruce Jones is vice president and director of the Foreign Policy program at the Brookings Institution and a senior fellow with the Institution’s Project on International Order and Strategy. He is also a consulting professor at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies at Stanford University and chair of the advisory council of the Center on International Cooperation at New York University.
Dr Jones’ current research focuses on US strategy, international order, and the emerging powers. His most recent book on the topic is Still Ours to Lead: America, Rising Powers, and the Tension between Rivalry and Restraint (Brookings Institution Press, 2014).
Dr Jones has extensive experience and expertise on intervention and crisis management. He served in the United Nations Mission in Kosovo, and was special assistant to the UN special coordinator for the Middle East peace process.
He has also served in advisory positions for the US State Department and the World Bank on fragile states, including as senior external advisor for the World Bank’s World Development Report 2011: Conflict, Security and Development. Dr Jones was also a senior advisor to UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan on UN reform and served as deputy research director to the UN’s High-level Panel on Threats, Challenges and Change, as well as lead scholar for the International Task Force on Global Public Goods.
Dr Jones is one of Washington’s most kinetic and respected actors on international relations. He holds a doctorate from the London School of Economics, and was Hamburg Fellow in Conflict Prevention at Stanford University.
