The psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan had some unique and insightful ideas. In this video, Zizek describes one of Lacan's best insights- that enjoyment is not only the straightforward experience of excitement or contentment. Rather, there is also the experience of enjoyment which comes from our relationship with others, which takes on some unusual forms. Lacan gets the term "surplus enjoyment" as an analogy with surplus revenue in a business- the revenue required to cover the costs of the business is not seen as good enough, even if it is for all practical purposes. Rather, there must also be the surplus revenue (profit) to increase the business' power to affect the outside world and impose itself upon it.
