Russian President Vladimir Putin said Thursday that a decision to extend Russia’s participation in the International Space Station (ISS) until 2028 is a temporary solution as the country needs to develop its own national orbital station.
“Since the functionality of the ISS is hardly possible without our Russian competencies, we have extended our participation in the project until 2028. Obviously, this is only a temporary interim solution”, Putin said at a meeting on the development of the space industry.
“That is why our specialists began to develop the tactical and technical characteristics of our own Russian orbital station", he added. His remarks were made during a visit to an exhibition of promising space industry projects.
Putin was accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Industry and Trade Denis Manturov and General Director of Russian State Corporation Roscosmos Yuri Borisov. After touring the facilities Putin answered questions from young scientists employed in the space industry and held a meeting on the development of the industry.
