To join the fun for Halloween Day (31st October), I have chose to share with you a song from the Disney animation, a character that I think is very scary for little girls. The villain in The Little Mermaid, Ursula the sea witch, has an intimidating physical outlook, a deep scary voice and dark aura around her. Basically her whole demeanor is “scary”. Nothing good will result in associating with her. Look at the sad ending for princess Ariel … 😭. This story kinda reminds us not to go against ‘nature’ to gain the unattainable things !

Short background:
“Poor Unfortunate Souls” is one of the songs from the 1989 Disney animated film The Little Mermaid, sung by Ursula (voiced over by Pat Carroll). The song is written by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken.
In this song Ursula tries to tempt princess Ariel into trading her voice for the chance to temporarily become human so that she may earns the love of Prince Eric in 3 days and to give her a true love kiss. If Ariel fails in getting her true love kiss in 3 days, the ‘payment’ will be her soul belongs to Ursula.

Pat Carroll did an extremely good voice-over as Ursula. She told in interviews that this was one of her favorite projects. It was sad to read the news of her death on the 30th July 2022 from pneumonia at the age of 95. I will always remember her for this character.

For the Electone cover, this song is quite tricky to play. The player has to beware of time signature and tempo changes. In addition, this song must be played with a lot of accents starting from the mid section towards the end, especially @ the climax part, every notes in all 3 tiers needed accent. The accent notes are to loop the listeners into the song, otherwise the song will sound flat. Overall, playing villain songs are fun. It has “dark melodies” and it has different playing techniques.
