Nerds 2.0.1: A Brief History of the Internet (1998) is a three-hour documentary film written and hosted by Mark Stephens under the pseudonym Robert X. Cringely and produced by Oregon Public Broadcasting for PBS. Every version of this documentary on the internet (archive.org, youtube, etc.) is just truly horrible quality, and this work is IMO historically significant, so I took it upon myself to perform a proper transfer.
A sequel to Triumph of the Nerds, Nerds 2.0.1 documents the development of ARPANET, the Internet, the World Wide Web and the dot-com bubble of the mid- and late-1990s. It was broadcast two years prior to the collapse of the dot-com bubble. The documentary was later turned into a book of the same title by series director Stephen Segaller. Some of the people interviewed:
Leonard Kleinrock (who describes in detail his involvement with ARPANET)
Jeff Bezos, back when Amazon was less than 6 years old
Sandy Lerner and Leonard Bosack (founders of Cisco)
Scott McAfee (seemingly very sane and rational, unlike his later years' exploits)
Bill Joy
Marc Andreessen
Steve Ballmer
Eric Schmidt
Tim Berners-Lee
Steve Case
Vint Cerf
Larry Ellison
Doug Engelbart
Bill Gates
Steve Jobs
Bob Kahn
Vinod Khosla
Scott McNealy
Ted Nelson
Lynette Huo
The only version of this documentary released to date has been on VHS. This transfer was done using a new process that combines 3 or more captures to boost signal and reduce noise (hint: Linear Dodge (Add) in Premiere/After Effects) and was, IMO, mostly successful.
