What is Aquaphobia?
[ Ссылка ]
Aquaphobia is the extreme fear of water. This could manifest in a few ways and might be specific to only large bodies of water or could be as extreme as being afraid to even take a bath or a shower, depending on how the phobia was developed. Someone suffering from this phobia will have panic symptoms when faced with going in or on the water. Even a picture of the ocean might trigger some extreme Aquaphobics.
Aquaphobia is often mixed up with hydrophobia, however, hydrophobia is more specifically based on a symptom of when someone has contracted rabies as opposed to a general fear of water.
The word Aquaphobia comes from both Latin and Greek origins. 'Aqua' is Latin for water and 'phobos' is Greek for dread or fear.
CAN I BE CURED?
Interesting Fact:
This phobia affects many people around the world and does not just affect children. In the UK it is estimated that one in eight adults are either non-swimmers or weak swimmers and suffer from this phobia.
Aquaphobia Causes:
Many children are afraid of the water at first. However, with support, most overcome this fear and learn the valuable skill of being able to swim. But for some, the fear grows instead of subsides. Often this is due to a traumatic incident involving water as almost drowning or panicking within the water in fear of drowning. A child could also learn this phobia from parents or other relatives if they have the phobia. If a child watches someone struggling or being afraid in the water they may also develop the phobia decide to never try swimming in the first place.
If a child was simply never taught how to swim it can also create Aquaphobia in adulthood. The fear is then based on the unknown.
When Aquaphobia is based specifically on bigger bodies of water like lakes or the ocean, the fear is often linked with another closely related phobia, Bathophobia, the fear of depths. This phobia finds it terrifying to be in or on large, deep bodies of water, in fear that some malevolent unknown threat is lurking beneath that can cause harm. This also closely ties in with shark phobias (Galeophobia) as well.
Aquaphobia Symptoms:
A person suffering from Aquaphobia will avoid going into the water like swimming pools, lakes, and the ocean. As mentioned, extreme cases will struggle to even get into the bathtub or shower. This might cause them to have poor hygiene. Any mention of getting into water could start to give a suffer symptoms of a panic attack.
Other symptoms also include:
Rapid heart rate
Dizziness
Screaming
Hysteria
Hyperventilating
Feeling of choking
Fainting
Trembling and/or sweating
Crying
Nausea or other gastrointestinal distress
Why I Should Get Treated:
Water is the basic element that gives us all life and is so important to our daily needs. The ability to not be able to swim is a huge disadvantage as in an emergency you might need to save your own life or someone else's, so having a phobia of water is a huge limitation. There are many beautiful experiences that happen in oceans and lakes and to miss out traveling and enjoying these magnificent aspects of nature is also a regrettable way to live life. Also, being afraid to bath could really affect not only your health but also your social life!
