(28 Apr 1977) In Stuttgart, West Germany, the three surviving leaders of the so-called Baader-Meinhof group were sentenced to life imprisonment on charges of carrying out terrorist activities including murder and attempted murder. Andreas Baader (Aged 34), Gudrun Ensslin (36), and Jan-Karl Raspe (32) also received prison terms for bombings, using firearms and founding a criminal organisation. Holger Meins died after a hunger strike before the trial began, and Ulrike Meinhof, the former woman journalist who gave her name to the group, allegedly killed herself in her cell last year.
