Climb aboard a long boat, headed up the Mekong River from Luang Prabang, Laos, to visit the Pak Ou caves, a spiritual and pilgrimage site for more than 1,000 years. The caves are filled with Buddha images, many old and retired while many others have been brought by pilgrims as an offering to celebrate their journey to the caves.
Exploring the caves is fun, to be sure, but a huge part of the experience is also riding up and down the Mekong river on one of the long boats, taking in the scenes from the banks where families live through farming, fishing and handicrafts. Oh, and distilling Lao Lao, the local rice whiskey which you'll get to taste as part of the trip. Wow.
The day trip is both spiritual and beautiful. And, when the weather cooperates, a great day out on the water.
