Engines of Creation is a loose (and heavy) meditation on 90's techno, cyberpunk, and works such as Ghost in the Shell and Animatrix, clips of which, by the way, I used in making this video.
It seems to me that these days, with such rapid AI development, these works are even more relevant than they were during their premieres.
As an opponent of AI "art" (or rather, fake art - fart), I don't want to delve too deeply into issues such as the facilitation of human life by computers (which seems especially helpful in areas such as medicine or eminently harmful work to be done by humans) and leave this topic to people much wiser than myself, I think it is eminently obnoxious and dystopian-capitalist to reduce art to a few-sentence prompts that can be typed by anyone and drive out of business people who have devoted their entire lives to art.
I also don't see much opposition raised by musicians in the public space, which is appalling, given the tremendous fight by illustrators, graphic designers and other visual artists (led by heroes of this fight such as Karla Ortiz, Sarah Andersen, Kelly McKernan and Randy Toroni to name a few) against the theft of artists' paintings or graphics by AI. To paraphrase Martin Niemöller:
"First they came for the Illustrators, and I didn't speak out-.
Because I was not an Illustrator (...)"
Alone we can't do much against the whole machine, but in a group we are a force that no one will be able to underestimate. I just hope we can unite.
Stay true, stay Anti-AI.
