Faust, an old man turned young by Mèphistophélès (Mefisto) is sitting behind his desk. He has countless books piled up before him. Alas! He is desperate, he has gained a lot of knowledge but only attained little wisdom. He is devastated in searching the meaning of life. He is ready to end his life. When he leads the poison to his mouth, he hears the singing of young women and peasants. The singing distracts him. He feels that love, happiness and fame have left him. He would make one last attempt, even with Satan’s help that appears in person as Mefisto.
He asks Faust why he called him. Faust explains, “Love is what I've been missing”. Mefisto could grant him this wish. When Faust asks him what he wants in return, Mefisto replies, that the worldly life will belong to Faust, but his soul will belongs to him in the afterlife. Mefisto creates a vision of Marguerite on the spinning wheel. Faust enchanted and falls under the spell. He quickly signs Mefisto’s agreement and receives a rejuvenating potion in return, which he drinks greedily. Faust triumphantly praises his youth. The next day Faust sees Marguerite in the village. Faust speaks to Marguerite. But she rejects him. Faust is not discouraged, he loves her even more. Faust appears in the garden accompanied by Mefisto. Mefisto leaves to procure a gift for Marguerite. Faust is alone and in anticipation of the reunion with Marguerite.
Approaching Marguerite's house, Faust is struck by the purity of the dwelling and the innocence of Marguerite inside. He then goes on to thank Nature for creating the beautiful angelic creature that is Marguerite.
