This video (on a Toyota Prius) provides you with a brief explanation of what not to do with cars equipped with E (Electronic) brake systems (also referred to as Electronic Parking Brakes - EBP or EPB) when servicing these brakes. The e-brake is usually a hydraulic (brake fluid) pump driven system that replaces the conventional hand brake or foot pedal emergency brake. It prevents the car from moving when parked on an incline and may have the added feature of allowing you to remove your foot off the brake pedal with the car engine running and the transmission in drive on a hill. The car will not roll back (hill hold function) as well as move forward (auto hold function) until the accelerator pedal is depressed.
When servicing (replacing) worn brake pads and rotors with cars equipped with e-brakes, the ignition along with the e-brake must be off. If these rules are not followed, the caliper pistons may shoot out when the caliper is removed or rotated away from the caliper bracket. Replacement of the pads and rotors can proceed with no other special considerations.
