While in Pennsylvania near Honesdale, we saw this brilliant red-spotted newt in the forest, roaming through the leaf litter. This salamander is in its juvenile phase known as an "eft." Their bright color acts as a warning signal to predators because they can secrete poisonous toxins. Red-spotted newts are widespread in the eastern U.S. and can live 12-15 years.
