수직형 마이크로 LED 기술 개발...뇌 과학에도 적용
Korean researchers have developed a technology that reduces the production cost of vertical micro LEDs while improving their optical efficiency.

Micro LEDs have become a strong candidate for use in next-generation displays …with their ultra-low power consumption, fast response speed and excellent flexibility.
However, in the past, the manufacturing process had been too costly and time consuming.
To solve these problems, Korean researchers have designed their own equipment for producing vertical micro LEDs.
"Vertical micro LEDs have a shorter current path than horizontal thin film LEDs so they emit less heat, have a lower resistance and achieve a higher level of optical efficiency."
The researchers developed flexible vertical micro LEDs by simultaneously transferring 25-hundred thin film LEDs with a thickness of five to 80 micrometers.
This can triple the optical efficiency of existing LEDs and solve the problems of their short product lifespan due to heating, low resolution and low reliability.
The researchers have also succeeded in controlling animal behavior by inserting micro LEDs into the brain of a mouse.
The technology is expected to be applied to various fields such as brain science.
"It can be immediately applied to smart watches, mobile displays and wearable lights requiring low electric power, and it will be able to make a large contribution to the development of biomedical devices as well."
The findings were published in the Nano Energy journal.
