The weaves of Maharashtra exemplify a rich tapestry of traditional craftsmanship and cultural heritage. From the intricate handloom sarees like Paithani and Karwath Kathi to the vibrant cotton fabrics like Khun and Puneri, Maharashtra boasts a diverse range of weaving traditions.
Let’s get to know about these different varieties of Sarees from the state of Maharashtra.
Paithani silk saree is one of the most well-known textiles of Maharashtra and gets its name from the town of Paithan in Aurangabad district.
The Paithani saree can be classified under three criteria: motifs, weaving, and colours.
Paithani sarees, have a vibrant color palette with a rich tapestry of hues inspired by nature.
Since ancient times, Maharashtrian brides refer to it as the Queen of Sarees.
Karvat Kathi silk sarees also known as Karvathi hail from the Vidarbha region in the Bhandara district. This saree is called Karvat Kati due to its unique saw-edged pattern on the border. These sarees are made from Tussar, a variety of silk with a grainy, textural feel. This unique saree is an auspicious wear for various occasions and celebrations.
The Himroo saree from Aurangabad is in demand for its unique style and design. Some historians believe that Himroo was the innovation of local craftsmen with a silk and cotton blend.
Puneri cotton saree is one of the most prominent weaves of Maharashtra and an emblematic cloth of Pune. This saree is a canvas of modest elegance with a long-standing history traced back to the era of the spirited Marathas and Peshwas.
The traditional and culturally significant Khun sarees are beautiful & lightweight which have many combinations and innumerable designs, motifs and patterns on the cloth. This is a silk-cotton blended saree with a traditional woven resham border.
Narayan Peth saree is very popular in Sholapur district of Maharashtra. This elegant silk cotton saree features contrasting colors with special pallus and traditional borders.
The Nauvari saree is deeply rooted in Maharashtrian history and culture. According to legends, during the Maratha reign, women were assigned with the job of assisting their fellow male warriors and hence wore this style of draping which requires a length of 9 yards.
Nauvari sarees are the traditional wear adopted by Maharashtrian brides for their wedding similar to madisaar style sarees of tamil nadu.
For most Indian women, like me, the saree is not just another attire, but an extension of my personality. So, the next time you wear a saree, like I do, just live the rich lineage that unfolds as you wear it. Remember, you are wearing a piece of garment that has lived through centuries!
