Piett’s meteoric rise through the ranks of the Imperial Navy led him to command the Star Destroyer Accuser, and then he was chosen to join Darth Vader’s Death Squadron to find and destroy the Rebel Alliance’s secret base. As commander of Vader’s flagship, the Executor, Piett discreetly undermined his superior, Admiral Kendal Ozzel, and when the Sith removed Ozzel for glaring incompetence at Hoth, Piett became fleet admiral. But when he failed to capture the Millennium Falcon at Bespin, Vader shockingly spared his life. Piett became a legend within the Navy for surving this failure, earning him the moniker "the admiral so valuable Darth Vader would not execute him.”
