Fisheries workers around the world are suffering abuse, violence and mistreatment at the hands of vessel operators. Dwindling fish stocks mean that vessels are staying at sea longer, going further afield for ever diminishing returns. In turn, operators are using human trafficking networks to crew their vessels, keeping them working for little or no money, sometimes for years at a time. They use violence, intimidation and even murder to keep crews in line and keep cheap seafood on our supermarket shelves.
