La Palma's volcano suddenly stopped erupting around 10am today with its main crater empty of lava and ash - before restarting again two hours later with explosions heard for miles around. Experts are now trying to work out what caused the brief hiatus, fearing the volcano could be gearing up for a 'big bust' of activity or could open a new vent, placing more people in danger. Meanwhile a river of lava already expelled from the crater continued to trickle towards the sea today, with nearby residents told to lock their window because it will produce a cloud of poison gas as it mixes with the sea water.
