Nepal’s relationship with India is both old and muti-faceted. As a land-locked
country, with two giants to its north and south, Nepal has played a balancing role in its foreign policy. However, the Marxist leadership tends to lean more towards China. Nepal’s geographical location makes it imperative for the country to maintain warm relations with India for its economy to flourish.
China has been trying to tie the Nepalese economy to its own and aggressively dominate Kathmandu’s strategic decision making. However, the mood in the streets of Nepal, beyond Kathmandu, is very much in India’s favour. The retired Nepalese soldiers who have served in the Indian Army, and earn a pension for their services, are the best ambassadors that India has in Nepal.
The Agnipath scheme of recruitment hasn’t found much support in Nepal. We need to take a long-term view of the issue and give due weightage to the Nepalese Indian forces veterans’ response to Agnipath.
