Lee Davy is the CEO of a business called The Truth About Alcohol, the founder of it, and it's been very cool, been watching Lee's journey. He's been watching mine. We've exchanged lots of things. His was the first podcast I was ever on in my life. We’ll start with Lee’s Story.

Where Did The Truth About Alcohol Originate?
Where do we start? I'm going to do a bit of pulp fiction, so I'm going to jump in and out. I'm going to take you back to me being 18 years of age, and I'm in Cyprus, Ayia Napa, which was a kind of a cool place to be at the time. I went with a friend and his girlfriend. That tells you so much about the depths I would go to get a party in. I went out on the second night we were there in Cyprus, Annie, and I was blind drunk, taking far too many drugs, and I blacked out. I woke up the next day in the hospital, completely terrified, in pain

Lucky To Be Alive
Doctors said that I was lucky to be alive. I was millimeters away from severing my brachial artery. I'd been stabbed and beaten and I was in a black out state. As you can imagine, when you just arrived in Cyprus, you have no idea where you are. You're in the second day, you're blacked out, someone has taken your arm off nearly and somehow I managed to get to the hospital. I have no idea how. I got stitched up and then went home the next day.

Slow Learner
The reason I'm starting there, Annie, is that is when I was 18. I didn't become someone who doesn't drink alcohol until 35.

I want to start there because I think that just goes to show the power of the system and how we turn life threatening painful experiences into pleasurable experiences in order for the dissonance to keep at bay and so we can keep on drinking.

Cool Kid
I started drinking at 14, just so I could be the cool kid. I really hit it hard. In the South Wales Valleys it is just the norm, it is what you do. There is no conscious thought given to the decision to drink alcohol, you just cannot wait to do that. My biggest catalyst toward me actually drinking was my father. That was the only way he remembered his father connecting with him. So it was my dad that actually lured me into the pub very, very early. We were all drinking below the age you were allowed to. My son does the same now in that part of the world. It hasn't changed.

Addiction
Then we'll fast forward to 35. I was arguing all the time, skipping hours on a Monday morning because I was hungover. Hopping in the pub every single night drinking. To top it off, I had a terrible gambling addiction which came up. I was 30,000 pounds in debt, Annie and to be honest with you, I had no way I was gonna get out of it because as a salaried position you can't earn overtime. My only thought was, "I'm gonna be doomed."

Figuring Out The Truth About Alcohol
So around 35, I'm arguing all the time with my wife and I thought to myself, "the alcohol is the key denominator here." I decided I would stop drinking alcohol. I figured it was time I discover the truth about alcohol as well.

Quitting
So I gave up drinking. I had zero cravings and zero desires as soon as I realized that I was taking the vow to stop drinking. My wife divorced me, so it didn't work. A really harrowing time but out of all this adversity comes a lot of change. I decided that I would quit the railway. I think a lot of people, they stop drinking alcohol and immediately they expect really great things to happen.

What generally happens is you get more grief and more pain and more suffering because you're actually alive all of the sudden. You're actually doing more meaning and purpose stuff which means your life is more complicated and more difficult. You don't have alcohol to help you deal with that. A lot of people don't like that and they go back to drinking alcohol.
