In this cow eye dissection tutorial, we will explore the basic eyeball anatomy and physiology alongside the dissection tutorial.

The basic parts of the dissection are the external observation of the eyeball, the dissection of the inner eye. We will see the cornea, sclera, fat, muscle, and optic nerve on the outside. On the inside, we will remove the cornea, remove the iris. Discuss how the pupil really doesn't exist. Once the iris is removed we will remove the lens. The lens is one of two focusing structures in the eye with the cornea being the other. The cornea is responsible for the bulk of the focusing of light while the lens makes images sharp.

Inside the eye, under the lens is a space called a humor-filled with the vitreous body. This clear jelly-like substance keeps the intra-ocular pressure stable and maintains the shape of the eye. Past the vitreous body is the retina. This nerve sheet coats the back of the eye and houses the rods and cones,. The rods help us in low light while the cones are for color vision. These receptors send impulses to the brain via the optic nerve. One additional structure we will see that humans do not have is a tapetum, a colored and reflective layer between the choroid and the retina that assists animals with night vision.
