Ear pressure, Vertigo and migraine after swimming or scuba diving or air travel? Could they be due to poor jaw alignment / TMD?
Alison has always had a passion for swimming even as a young child in Florida. She was involved in competitive swimming and was training to be a rescue diver / lifeguard. She also enjoyed scuba diving in the ocean. This was a very big part of her life but in her early 20's she was no longer able to do these things without paying a very big price. For several days she would suffer with severe headaches, migraines, head pressure and felt as if her head was in a pressure cooker.
Alison couldn't even swim one lap without getting a migraine that would last about 24 hours. She would feel nauseated and couldn't even walk straight. She began to feel as if she couldn't even function. At the age of 12 she was diagnosed with having TMJ due to a clicking jaw. She was told that the only way to fix it was with TMJ surgery. She decided to just deal with the pain until she found Dr Raman in her 30's.
Alison initially came to see Dr Raman for a consultation for jaw pain and then went through a series of diagnostic testing. Once it was determined where the correct jaw/neck alignment should be she was then fitted with a fixed physiologic neuromuscular orthotic for 90 days. She was treated physiologic neuromuscular functional orthodontics as phase 2 of her treatment. Alison recently went to Texas with her fiancé Nate and went to the ocean. For the first time in 10 years she was able to swim without any side effects. She was even able to swim laps in a pool.
Alison is an artist and prior to treatment had noticed that her right arm was starting to shut down making it difficult to do her work. She no longer has right arm pain and is happy to be able to get back to doing the things she loves in life. She is swimming regularly as it makes her happy. She is able to travel by air without any problems either.
