In one of my recent videos, I posted the first trip report video of my first flight down to Atlanta. June 9, 2023 I had flown for my very first time in over 11 years and got to experience flying on Delta's iconic 717-200 from Charlotte to Atlanta!
This flight was my 2nd flight during the weekend trip to ATL, it was my return flight back ti Charlotte on June 11, 2023. It was amazing getting to experience the 717 throughout both flights and I'm so glad to have gotten to experience it before these beautiful aircraft soon meet their retirement in the years to come!
This flight was just over 2 weeks before the Delta 717 accident that took place at Charlotte on the same runway I landed on during this flight (18R/36L). Although it was not the same exact 717 I flew in that was involved in the accident, it was pretty weird thinking that just 2 weeks earlier it could’ve been my flight that would’ve been involved. Luckily the accident was not severe with no injuries reported and the plane didn’t suffer intense damage but unfortunately N955AT (the aircraft involved) will be scrapped.
I really hope the accident that took place last week at CLT will not bring the retirement for Deltas 717 fleet closer. Both flight I flew in the 717 were very comfortable with pretty good space in the cabin. The 717 is such an amazing aircraft and one of the safest, I really hope Delta keeps them for a longer period of time!
The particular 717 I flew on for this 4:40PM
(scheduled) flight from Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson Int'l Airport to Charlotte Douglas Int’l Airport was N982AT which is a 20 year old 717 that was formerly owned by AirTran. It became part of Deltas fleet around 2016 and is currently still used by Delta.
Delta is the number 1 operator for the 717 and is currently 1 of 2 operators still flying the 717 with the other being Hawaiian Airlines! Qantas also still flys the 717 but they will be fully retiring it by the end of 2023.
The 717 is such an amazing aircraft to fly on and I hope Delta keeps the aircraft in its fleet past the the year 2025 (the current year planned for its retirement). Unfortunately Delta only operates the 717 to a certain number of airports throughout the US but the best place to fly on one is definitely Atlanta! The 717 is definitely an aircraft all aviation enthusiasts should get the experience to fly one 😁!
