In 1971, NYPD Detective Frank Serpico and NYPD Sgt. David Durk were among those who testified at the Knapp Commission hearings investigating police corruption in the New York City Police Department. Serpico and Durk were honest cops. The book 'Serpico' by Peter Maas, was made into a movie starring Al Pacino.
Corrupt NYPD Detective Robert Leuci who was assigned to the Special Investigation Unit (SIU) of the Narcotics Division cooperated with federal prosecutors. The book 'Prince of the City' by Robert Daley was based on Leuci. The book was later made into a movie of the same title. Leuci became a New York Times best-selling author and an adjunct professor in Rhode Island.
Twenty years after the Knapp Commission, in 1993, NYPD Sgt. Joseph Trimboli testified at the Mollen Commission hearings investigating NYPD corruption. Trimboli testified that the department had thwarted his investigation into corrupt NYPD cop Michael Dowd and his associates.
