Murukku/Cocktail mixture recipe given below.
Murukku mixture is a popular Indian-origin snack, often served at Sri Lankan parties and paired with alcoholic drinks, hence the name 'Cocktail Mixture' in Sri Lanka. It is the Indian/Sri Lankan equivalent of 'trail mix'.
Store-bought Murukku Mixture can contain high levels of salt, MSG and artificial colors, preservatives and flavors. Make it at home in 20 minutes or less with simple, all natural ingredients.
Murukku Mixture Recipe.
1 ¼ cup store-bought chickpea flour (besan)
Salt to your taste
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon paprika or chili powder
¼ cup + a little more coconut milk (You may or may not use all the coconut milk)
A handful of curry leaves (caution! fresh curry leaves splatter when deep frying)
¼ cup raw peanuts, cashew (quantity to your liking)
¼ cup raisins and other dried fruit, deep fried lentils, cereals, puffed rice etc
Oil for shallow frying
*Do not fry the dried fruit, cereals, puffed rice etc.
1. Mix together the chickpea flour, salt, garlic powder, paprika or chili powder.
2. Pour a little coconut milk into the flour while mixing to make a fairly non-sticky dough
3. Heat oil until hot but not smoking hot. Use medium heat.
4. Pass dough mixture through a stringhopper press or sevai maker directly into the hot oil
5. Fry this for 30 to 40 seconds. Turn over and fry the other side for about 15-20 seconds
6. Set aside murukku in a bowl (do not place on paper towel)
7. Fry the nuts and curry leaves for about 30 seconds, add it into the murukku.
8. Add raisins or any other dried fruit, cereal, fried lentils etc.
10. Adjust salt to taste
Serve as a snack/trail mix.
