Yokohama was the first port opened up to foreign trade after the opening of Japan in 1854. At the forefront of the Meiji restoration, the first train line in Japan connected Tokyo and Yokohama.

The Yokohama Bay Bridge is a long-span bridge with a two-level structure that forms part of the Tokyo Bay Road and also the Bay Shore Route. It is a two-layered suspension cable-stayed bridge with a total length of 860m. The construction of Yokohama Bay Bridge was started with the aim of strengthening the function of Yokohama Port as an international port, and connecting the Honmoku futo and Daikoku futo.

Honmoku Futo (Pier)
Reclamation was initiated in 1963 and the pier was completed in 1970.
Honmoku Pier is the largest container terminal pier in the Port of Yokohama and it covers about 50 percent of the Port of Yokohama's container throughput. Also it handles around 40 percent of total cargo volume (excluding private terminals).The pier will continuously handle various kinds of import and export cargo as an important logistics base of the Port of Yokohama.

Daikoku Pier is the first manmade island-type pier at the Port of Yokohama, which was constructed between 1971 and 1990 in response to the growth in ocean-borne cargos and containerization.
On the pier, 25 berths (a total berth length of 5,250m), which includes three container berths and eight liner berths are located.
The pier mainly handles finished cars and large construction machines, so that the Port of Yokohama has converted its function into the one that is capable of dealing with RORO ships including PCCs.

The Bayshore Route of the Shuto Expressway (首都高速道路湾岸線, Shuto Kōsokudōro Wangan-sen or simply Wangan-sen for short) is a 70 kilometres (43 mi) stretch of toll highway in Greater Tokyo, that runs from Yokohama city, Kanazawa ward, to Ichikawa city of Chiba Prefecture. It is an important route that runs between artificial islands of Tokyo Bay by way of bridges and sub-sea tunnels, bypassing Tokyo entirely.
