The Tour De Brisbane cycle race closed major roads across Brisbane on a Sunday morning, and it presented an opportunity to show the stark contrast in noise levels between regular weekend traffic and silence.
The fact is, cities aren't naturally loud - they are just loud because we have over decades let them be dominated by motor vehicles, particularly cars.
Every time a road gets congested and population grows, governments fall over themselves to promise to "bust congestion" and widen the roads.
But do they ever consider that by doing so they are making our cities louder, and less liveable? Let alone actually making car dependence worse, congestion worse, and leading us to a climate catastrophe...
