Injuries around the hip joint are very common in elderly patients that is geriatric patients. One of the most common causes for injuries in hip joints in elderly is Osteoporosis. Because of Osteoporosis, the bones around the hip joints are rendered susceptible to fractures, even with a trivial fall. However such patients should be definitely managed, otherwise these patients will be bed ridden and they will have other problems related to be bed ridden. Such patient has to be treated surgically or by hip replacements. The common injuries around the hip joint includes the fractures around the neck of the femur, intertrochanteric fracture, subtrochanteric fracture. The fractures around the neck of the femur invariably don’t heal because of some of its own coherent fractures. Such patients should be considered for hip replacement operations. However fractures of the intertrochanteric region heals well to hasten its healing, as well as adequate fixation is required by proximal femoral nailing technique or a dynamic hip screw technique. By performing good surgeries, such patients can be ambulant. As early as first week and we can avoid other complications like bed ridden factors like pneumonitis and bed sores etc. definitely such patients should be made independent in their mobilization and they should not be dependent on others to perform their day to day activities.
