Guruh Gipsy: A Musical Masterpiece
The resonant sounds of the gamelan fill the atmosphere, blending seamlessly with progressive rock. A female choir sings lyrics evoking Indonesian independence and the grandeur of its natural beauty.
This unique atmosphere is captured in the song "Indonesia Maharddika" by the legendary band Guruh Gipsy. The band, featuring Guruh Sukarno Putra (composer), Chrisye (bass, vocals), Oding Nasution (guitar), Roni Harahap (piano), Abadi Soesman (keyboard, synthesizer), and Kinan Nasution (drums, vocals), created innovative music.
Their innovation shines through in their only album, "Kesepakatan dalam Kepekatan," released in 1977. This daring album of its time merges Western rock with the traditional sounds of Balinese gamelan.
Such collaborations were rare in the 1970s, despite some earlier attempts by other bands. Music critic Denny Sakrie praised the album as a costly and ambitious breakthrough, filled with sacrifice and ambition during its creation.
Despite its poor sales at the time, the album is now highly sought after by collectors, willing to pay millions of rupiah for a piece that marks the birth of progressive rock in Indonesia.
The recording of "Kesepakatan dalam Kepekatan" took place from July 1975 to November 1976 at Tri Angkasa recording studio in South Jakarta, the first and most advanced 16-track recording studio in Indonesia.
It's no wonder the technology excited Guruh Gipsy, enabling them to complete six songs over 16 months. One of their most monumental and brilliant tracks is "Indonesia Maharddika," a 15-minute epic showcasing Guruh's genius in blending Western progressive rock with Indonesian ethnic elements.
The album features a mix of modern instruments and Balinese traditional instruments like gamelan and gerong. Guruh also pioneered lyrical themes, eschewing the straightforward love songs dominating the Indonesian music scene at the time for poetic and metaphorical explorations of social and cultural topics.
In the Guruh Gipsy booklet, creator Guruh Sukarnoputra described the album as unconcerned with commercial success. It was, according to him, a response to the influx of foreign music, urging Indonesians to preserve their cultural heritage. "Our music was born out of concern," said Guruh.
Who is Guruh Gipsy?
The project began after the young artist and son of former President Sukarno, Guruh Sukarno Putra, returned from the Netherlands. Known for his deep understanding of Indonesian culture, especially Bali, Guruh collaborated with the band Gipsy, comprising Chrisye, Kinan Nasution, Oding Nasution, Abadi Soesman, and Roni Harahap.
This collaboration was unique. Guruh was known for his contemporary art explorations with Balinese music and dance, while Gipsy was recognized for their bold performances of progressive rock akin to Genesis, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Yes, and Gentle Giant.
