“Garlic doesn’t need very much space to grow, each clove only needs to be planted 6 inches apart. So in a 5ft x 5ft space you could technically plant up to 100 garlic cloves. But in my opinion that is way more than plenty so you could always space them out more. I started with about 70 and ended up harvesting 57 (due to issues like how I harvested the first ones plus a few that didn’t grow well).
Garlic is planted in the fall of one year to be harvested mid summer of the next year. So.. coming up very soon it will be the time to plant! 🧄
I harvested 57 bulbs of garlic this year. I planted the seeds (garlic cloves) last October and harvested them this July.
They didn’t take much effort or space and now I have enough to last me until harvest next year!! Honestly, they were my best growing crop this year!
So how do you do it?
Firstly, look up the zone you live in! This will inform you about planting and harvesting times!
Next find a garlic seed supplier. Ideally you’ll buy seed your first year and if you want to continue growing that variety, you save your own seed for the next year from the garlic you grew and so on. Garlic “seed” is just one garlic clove.
I used @johnnys_seeds Organic German Extra Hardy!
Then you just need to find a space and plant!
Well, there’s actually a little more that goes into it, you’ll have to search and learn about how to prep your soil and fertilize!
So I suggest going to YouTube and typing something along the lines of “how to grow garlic for beginners”
And then you’ll have garlic too!! Skip the grocery store and use what you grow on your own instead!
Not only is it much better for you because it doesn’t have any chemical sprayed on or near it but the garlic grown in home gardens is usually much bigger than that from stores and you have the pride and joy of growing your own food!
Happy planting!”
