This week we are very excited to launch our first rewilding vote outside of Europe! Our partners Oana are working in a remote location in southern Namibia, close to the border with South Africa. It is drastically different from our usual project areas, with desert and shrubland habitats. Together with our partners, we have put together three amazing projects to help transform this area of old farmland into a rewilded environment.

ABOUT THE OPTIONS
===============================
Option 1: Building a vulture restaurant
Three species of vulture that were once found in the area are now locally extinct and endangered globally - the cape vulture, lappet faced vulture and white backed vulture. Among the threats are poisoning through contaminated livestock and a lack of wild prey. To provide a safe and reliable source of food and encourage the return of these magnificent and ecologically important species, our partners Oana, would like to build a vulture restaurant where the vultures can find a safe and reliable source of food. This project is urgently needed to safeguard the future of these endangered species.

Option 2: Investigating burrowing species
In the face of climate change, animals that build underground burrows are vital for enabling a diversity of species to adapt to rising temperatures in this extreme climate. To better understand the importance of these ecosystem engineers, our partners Oana would establish a research project, with the help of a local university student, to investigate the occupancy of burrows, that is, which species use them and when in relation to temperature extremes.

Option 3: Building a tree nursery
Invasive plants and overgrazing are threatening the sensitive vegetation that is able to thrive in this harsh landscape. To restore the river beds as well as the grassland ecosystem, Oana would build a nursery where they would raise native seedlings for planting out across the landscape. The funds from this project would be used to purchase the main supplies and materials needed to build the infrastructure.
