This video talks about “Why are there so many loser Farang men in Thailand” and the disrespectful concept of “THEM”. I never thought I would be making videos like this until recently, because my YT channel is not about “cheapest this” or sensational stories about foreigners being arrested or relationships going to the wall. But after I read a FB post recently that was a real conversation started “Why are there so many loser Farang men in Thailand” I was prompted to make my last talking head video “What do I miss about living in the UK” which got me started on a couple of topics I wanted to talk with you about.
In this video I do a bit of intentional finger pointing, at predominantly men, who come to Thailand without a realistic purpose or open mind to enable them to adjust and assimilate into their new surroundings without causing themselves difficulties when their confidence & ego are damaged by subsequent disappointment.
Many foreigners say that they notice other farangs ignoring them, turning their heads or walking away and feeling like there is some sort of weirdness about it.
To be honest, I when I came to to live in Thailand in 2004 I had seen & heard some really bad press about why foreigners came to Thailand, in fact one memory sticks in my mind of a friend in the UK asking me why I wanted to go to a place that was just a magnet for men to ogle girls dancing on tables.
And when I arrived here, quite green behind the ears as to the social scene, as I had never been a bar goer, not interested in dating because I already lived with the love of my life, I literally shut down and started to lose some English as I would speak parrot English to Nathaporn and anyone we met. I followed some on line discussions but didn’t really know or meet other Farangs. In 2004 - 2006 I seemed to shut my self off from the western world I had so happily left.
In 2006 I answered an advert in a local magazine (FB wasn’t public till later that year) to help out at a local dog rescue Cafe for Dogs. For the first time in 2 years I was meeting other foreigners and for a while I struggled as I found a few things that troubled me then, as they still do today.
Meeting English speaking folks was interesting, because it gave me a chance to use vocabulary that had fallen off the back of the disk but it was also difficult because not one of them shared my thoughts on how I felt about Thai people. After all, I had now lived in Thailand with a Thai family for 2 years and now I listened to people talking about Thai people in an assortment of ways.
I also experienced foreigners that were either just passing through or had been in Thailand for quite some time, carrying out their daily lives as if they were back home. They did not adjust to expected practices and customs of living in Thailand and as time went by I became increasingly unhappy by the amount of people who maintained an existence within a Farang bubble and were resistant to adopting a respectful appreciation for Thainess.
18 years on and many unhappy experiences witnessing similar issues, I am now able to understand why communities like Thai Visa got such a bad rap, why foreign media maintains a relatively poor image of this country and why I giggle at articles like “Why are there so many loser Farang men in Thailand”
If people move to Thailand, it is essential to integrate as much as possible by learning a new language, appreciating local customs and behaviour and ensuring we respect people in a Thai way & therefore changing our entire outlook on life, our behaviour and leave the 'western' models of life in the west.
