Usually associated with the Italian Renaissance, frescoes are not just regular Italian paintings. Frescoes were widely executed since the antiquity, including Ancient Rome, with the coloring achieved by applying pigments directly on a fresh, wet plaster base on the wall. By doing so, colors retain their vibrancy and last longer, remaining beautifully vivid. The painting must be done quickly and skillfully, before the plaster base dries.

Contrary to what people believe, this type of Italian wall art is very resistant even in high humidity rooms like baths and spas. On the other hand, murals, which are painted on a dry base wall, do not have this resistance and vibrancy.
