Many photographers don't understand the importance of shutter speed in sharp images. While the correct shutter speed doesn't guarantee a sharp image, the wrong one WILL guarantee a blurry image.
Shutter speed controls how quickly (or slowly) an image is taken. The slower the shutter, the longer the camera will capture information. If anything in your image moves while the camera captures the scene, it'll result in motion blur. Sometimes, your subject may move; other times, you may not hold your camera completely steady.
There isn't a perfect shutter speed that'll always result in sharp images. You must shoot much faster if you photograph a cheetah running through the plains than a sloth climbing up a tree. Picking the correct shutter speed is a learning process, so I always recommend reviewing your images as you shoot, zooming in on each image, and ensuring no motion blur is present. Finally, when in doubt, shoot a faster shutter speed than you think you need. Cleaning up noise from a slightly darker image is always easier due to a quicker shutter than fixing motion blur.
If I had to choose, a good shutter speed for medium-speed movement (person or animal walking), 1/300 second would be a good place to start. For faster movement, 1/1000 of a second would be my starting shutter speed and I'd review my images after taking a few to see if I could slow it down a little.
