While serving in the Middle East, Derik's Humvee hit a landmine, killing the other passengers in the vehicle and placing him in a coma for 6 weeks. While under, doctors repaired several broken bones and organs. Unfortunately, it wasn't until a traffic accident 10 years later, doctors discovered that Derik had actually broken part of his neck in the cervical spine and small fragments were lodged against his nerve endings causing unbelievable pain in the neck, shoulder, and hands.
After several attempts to manage the pain thru non-operative procedures, Derik sought out the expert advice of Dr. Eric Wieser of AOA Orthopedic Specialists. Dr. Eric Wieser assessed Derik's unique condition thru MRI and determined that several loose bone fragments in the neck were impinging the nerve endings, triggering Derik's severe pain. As Dr. Wieser and Derik discussed options, Derik realized that the best option would be a cervical disc arthroplasty in which Dr. Wieser would create a small incision at the base of the front of the neck and begin to dissect the scar tissue. Once in, Dr. Wieser would careful excise the fragments of Derik's Broken Neck and repair it with an implantation disc into the vertebrae. Derik knew right away that something about interacting with Dr. Wieser was different and after carefully discussing the options with his wife, chose to work with Dr. Wieser on his issue.
On July 19, 2019, Derik, Dr. Wieser and Warren Dean, PA invited us into the Operating Room at Baylor, Scott, and White Orthopedic and Spine Hospital at Arlington (Located in North Texas) to showcase the miraculous surgery to replace the disc and remove the broken bone fragments still lodged into Derik's spinal column. From here you will get a front row to see just how it all worked.
If you or someone you know is experiencing neck or back pain, you don't have to bare it alone. Call 817.375.5200 to come see Dr. Wieser or any of the team at the Texas Comprehensive Spine Center within AOA today.
