PUNK REVOLUTION NOW!!!!!!
Danny Brown is a hyper-entertaining class clown, an ingenious hip hop innovator, and above all, someone who carries a deep pain wherever he goes.
This perhaps relatable personality makeup shines wonderfully throughout his phenomenal discography. XXX for instance might at first listen sound like a wonderfully drugged-out party, but any thoughtful listener could tell you it's a cry for help. Atrocity Exhibition maybe even more so. It may be no surprise then that Danny continues to carry this profound sadness into Quaranta, captured in a more mature and explicit presentation as he traverses into the fourth decade of his life.
Quaranta is full of your expected Danny Brown genius. Why is this album called Quaranta anyways? Because it's Italian for forty? It is both profoundly sad to reflect on a mistake-ridden aging life, and also super shitposty to pick the Italian language at random lol.
The final "quadranta" sample at the end of the tremendously sad Bass Jam sums up Danny Brown as an artist perfectly. He just delivered a super honest and depressing track full of nostalgia and gloom, finishing off one of the most explicitly sad records in his discography, but he couldn't help but slip a goofy little "Quaranta" sample at the end to give you a smile. There's something so honest and human about it; this authenticity is what has made Danny shine his entire career.
Danny bounces between a dark, deep, reflective, and honest flow as demonstrated in tracks like Quaranta and Ain't My Concern, to his more characteristically hyped-up and quirky delivery in Tantor and Jenn's Terrific Vacation. I love the beats throughout this record, which are like deep free jazz jams with a tinge of melancholy, and the features work great as well!
While I appreciate the versatility, I do think this album is just a tad inconsistent, lacking a fully fleshed out cohesiveness, and is overall a little half-baked. Many tracks of these tracks are signature Danny Brown genius (Jenn's Terrific Vacation is stellar), but some songs seem to come-and-go, ending before leaving a meaningful impression. Given the 34 minute album length, every minute really needs to be phenomenal for this record to be on par with his previous records.
Overall, this feels like a nice addition to Danny's discography. I think releasing a mature and sad record at 40 feels really appropriate to his legacy. But in the end this record strikes me as only "very good", not peak Danny.
