Jeff Beck is one of the greatest guitarists who ever lived. Citing Les Paul as one of his biggest influences, Jeff came of prominence as the guitar player for The Yardbirds, after Eric Clapton had departed the group. His fuzz guitar is heard on "Heart Full of Soul". Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin would also join the group during his tenure. While Jeff sang lead vocals on his debut single, "Hi Ho Silver Lining" he never really sang on his future records and stuck to the guitar role. Jimmy Page wrote the single's B-side "Beck's Bolero" which included Keith Moon, John Paul Jones and Nicky Hopkins. This track would appear on his influential 1968 album with The Jeff Beck Group, Truth. The band featured a young Rod Stewart on vocals, Ron Wood on bass and Micky Waller on drums. Truth is considered a seminal moment in the development of hard rock and heavy metal with songs like "I Ain't Superstitious" featuring Jeff's wah-wah pedal and a cover of The Yardbirds "Shapes of Things." The group would also release Beck-Ola in 1969 with Tony Newman on drums, but disbanded shortly afterwards. A car accident fractured Jeff's scull, forcing him to stop performing for a year. After healing, he formed another group featuring Bobby Tench on vocals and Max Middleton on keyboards, who would also compose with Jeff. The group released Rough and Ready in 1971 and The Orange Album in 1972 which featured the song "Going Down". Jeff would also work with Stevie Wonder. Stevie had initially written Superstition for Jeff, but released the song as a single realizing its potential. Stevie would lend other songs to Jeff including "Thelonius" and "Cause We've Ended as Lovers". Jeff's cover of the later remains one of his most loved tracks featuring his adventurous soloing. Collaborating with the rhythm section from Vanilla Fudge and Cactus, bassist Tim Bogert and drummer Carmine Appice teamed up with Jeff to form Beck, Bogert & Appice and release an album in 1973. Jeff began to incorporate a talk box into his sound. In 1975, teaming up with Beatles producer George Martin, Jeff created an instrumental album incorporating elements of rock, jazz and funk. The album was Blow by Blow and featured Max Middleton on keyboards, Phil Chen on bass and Richard Bailey on drums. The album was a huge success, reaching number 4 on the billboard charts and Jeff's highest-charting album. "Freeway Jam" is considered one of his best guitar solos. George Martin would produce the next album in 1976, Wired, featuring Mahavishnu Orchestra members Jan Hammer and Narada Michael Walden. He would also tour with The Jan Hammer group of which a live album emerged. Jan and Jeff would collaborate on the 1980 release There & Back. Jeff would reunite with Rod Stewart on the single "People Get Ready" in 1985, a cover of the Curtis Mayfield classic. Throughout the 80s and 90s, Jeff Beck continued to collaborate with other artists, playing on Roger Waters Amused to Death. He would also cease to use a guitar pick and became known for playing finger-style. On his 2000 album You Had It Coming, he collaborated with Imogen Heap on Dirty Mind. He would release the 2007 live album Live at Ronnie Scott's with Vinnie Colaiuta, Jason Rebello, and Tal Wilkenfeld. 2010 saw the release of Emotion & Commotion, featuring Joss Stone on "I Put a Spell on You" and his cover of Puccini's "Nessun Dorma." In the 2020s, Jeff Beck teamed up with Johnny Depp and the two released 18 in 2022. Jeff Beck died on January 10th 2023 from a bacterial meningitis infection. He was 78. His influence on guitarists all over the globe is not to be forgotten.
