In today’s episode, we will be uncovering the mystery of the Lost Treasure of Lima. Said to be buried on Cocos Island, which historians claim to be the inspiration for Robert Louis Stephenson's Treasure Island, this treasure is worth over $200 million today.
It was accumulated by Spanish conquistadors over 3 centuries in Peru after defeating the Incas and includes a 7ft solid gold statue of the Virgin Mary. In the early 19th century, the Peruvian War of Independence forced the Spanish to move the treasure. It was during this transfer that greed got the better of one Captain William Thompson, after which, the treasure was never seen again.
