STORYLINE:
Several hundred Communist and nationalist demonstrators have staged a picket near the U-S embassy in Moscow to protest against the visit by U-S President George W Bush, who is due to arrive in the Russian capital soon.
Russian police were out in large numbers on Thursday to watch over the protesters who sang nationalist songs, chanted anti-American slogans and waved red Soviet-era flags.
There were no reports of any clashes.
Many demonstrators aimed their anger at Russian President Vladimir Putin, accusing him of selling out Russia to the Americans by agreeing to nuclear arms cuts.
The leftist and nationalist factions of the Russian political spectrum have become increasingly critical of Putin and his domestic and international policies, which they describe as pro-Western and unpatriotic.
