Rego Sensei going through a basic application of the throwing technique known asTai Otoshi (body drop) in defense to a round punch. The throw is followed up by a reverse shoulder lock known in Japanese as Gyaku Ude Garami. The central focus was on applying technically powerful circular pressure around a point in both the throw and the joint lock.
As a historical and pop-culture note:
Gyaku Ude Garami has, in recent years, become popular in less traditional circles as "The Kimura." This is in tribute to Masahiko Kimura, one of the most outstanding fighting judoka of all time. Masahiko Kimura Sensei has many accomplishments but within the low-resolution pop-culture of current martial arts he is famed for toying with and defeating Helio Gracie...eventually finishing him off with Gyaku Ude Garami.
In tribute to him (and due to a lack of regard for the traditional nomenclature), this technique started to become known as "The Kimura" in BJJ circles and this eventually spread to the sport of MMA as well. While we honor Kimura (for all of his accomplishments), we stay true to the traditional Japanese nomenclature and the name that Kimura himself would have known the technique by - its proper name - Gyaku Ude Garami.
