Rembrandt Master Copy, by Jelle van de Ridder
For anyone who wants to paint like Rembrandt! In this video, Jelle van de Ridder shows how he copied a Rembrandt copy of an Rembrandt's 'Bust of an Old Man with Gold Chain'.
Before the start of the video, the linen was prepared with a mixture of gesso and ivory black, umber, titanium white acrylics and the drawing from the original was transferred with transfer paper.
Lead white (not everywhere available due to its toxicity) was used because of its impasto like properties and very quick drying time. Alternatively one could use titanium white with impasto medium. The latter also accelerates drying time.
Palette of Old Holland colours:
- Lead White
- Napels Light and Deep
- Yellow Ochre
- Burnt Sienna
- Cadmium Orange
- Vermilion Red
- Burnt Umber
- Ultramarine Blue
- Ivory Black
Mediums:
- For underpainting: Only turpentine or mineral spirit
- For glazing: Mixed 1/6 venetian turpentine, 1/6 stand oil, 1/6 linseed oil, 3/6 turpentine/mineral spirit.
